My December

Despite the controversies that surrounded Kelly Clarkson's third studio album, My December is a solid release. The whole albums has a sort of rock feel to it, and each song has it's own catchy hook that gets you attempting to sing the song. My December is a departure from the 'Breakaway' image that Kelly created and the whole album exudes a sort of angry, frustrated vibe.

1. Never Again - The infectious first single. Surprisingly, Never Again is not the best song on the album, but it certainly is a good radio song. The song is very angry, bitter sounding, and it works. Kelly Clarkson delivers the lyrics with a raspy tone in her voice that just makes you want to listen to the album even more. A great way to start the CD.

2. One Minute - I really like this song. It has a very catchy hook, and it supported by a great percussion and guitar part. People can relate to the lyrics because they talk about laughing one minute, and the next, 'sinking into something black.'

3. Hole - The guitar part on this song is repetitive, but it really helps create the 'rock' sound that I think Kelly was trying to create with this album. The song itself has pretty depressing lyrics, talking about 'giving up on faith, on everything'.

4. Sober - This song really shows off Kelly Clarkson's vocal range and is probably the most 'pretty' song on this album. The lyrics are repetitive (she repeats 'three months' thirteen times), and so is the guitar part. The octave jumps, and key change that she does creates a sort of 'hypnotic' feel to the song. The timpani part in this song sounds very nice as well. Sober is a song that is open to personal interpretation. One can think of the song as being sober from alcohol or drugs, but it can also be interpreted as being free from a bad habit.

5. Don't Waste Your Time - Don't Waste Your Time would have to be my favorite song on this album because of it's meaningful lyrics and the catchy hook. Again, this song has an awesome guitar part.

6. Judas - One of the more edgy songs on the album. For me personally, it ranks as the least favored song on the CD, but it still is a good song.

7. Haunted - A song that was supposedly cut from Breakaway made it onto this album. Haunted is also one of the more edgier songs on the album, but it, like most of the other songs, has a very catchy hook. The beginning starts off with an awesome guitar (I think?) part and it actually creates a very 'haunted' feel.

8. Be Still - One of the more mellow songs on this album. Clarkson's vocals are very smooth sounding and soothing in this song. The guitar part on this song, unlike the other songs, is more of a supporting element and not the main theme of the song.

9. Maybe - Another one of the more mellow songs on this album. It's not as slow as Be Still, but it still is a very soothing song. This song only consists of a guitar part (well, I can only hear the guitar part) so it's very smooth sounding.

10. How I Feel - One of my favorites on the album. This song in my opinion is very Breakaway-esque, but it adds a nice touch to the album.

11. Yeah - Another one of my favorites. The guitar part on this song is what makes it so catchy in my opinion. The only two instruments I can hear on this song are guitar, drum set, and trumpets.

12. Can I Have a Kiss? - Another song that seems like it should have been on the Breakaway album. This song seems very radio-friendly, so it would probably be smart of Kelly to release it as a single.

13. Irvine - I would have to say that Irvine is the most mellow song on this album. Kelly Clarkson's vocals seem like they came from a different era in this song (it's probably some effect done in the studio) -- it is very soothing though.

So, overall, I would give My December a 5 star rating because of the way it stands out compared to some of Kelly Clarkson's contemporaries and the overall 'catchiness' of the songs. She's not afraid to create music that may not be accepted by some people, and she doesn't really care. No matter what kind of music Kelly Clarkson wants to make, she's here to stay.
